Part of our mission at Next Up is to expose our participants to the jobs and careers that exist within the skateboard industry, and recently we had another great opportunity to do just that. We got the chance to create a partnership with another non-profit organization, Black Book Sessions, and their founder Mural Martinez.
Black Book Sessions was courteous enough to teach 6 art classes in graphic design led by Mural Martinez. Through each phase of the art class the kids of Next Up had the opportunity to create their own Next Up t-shirt graphic. Each class presented more detail in the design process with the last step in the process resulting in picking two designs to be screen-printed.
The final art class culminated in a field trip to Hybrid Apparel, a design clothing & product company. During our time at Hybrid the kids got the chance to learn the extensive and creative screen-printing process and watch their designs come to life. Not only did the kids watch their designs come to life, they actually were able to participate in the printing process themselves! It was another fantastic opportunity brought together by people who have the same interest in helping the community in experiencing all aspects of the skateboarding business. Thanks to Black Book Sessions, Hybrid Apparel, Mural Martinez, Tom of Hybrid and everyone who helped help this wonderful project come to life!
