Part of our mission is to encourage education among Anaheim youth. On Feb. 14th, Keen Ramps’ founder, Cory Keen, led a 3D skatepark design workshop. We hoped that our students were going to be able to design their own skatepark; however, as the workshop progressed, the expectations changed due to the complexity of the activity. The new immediate goal became to have the skaters designing a mini half-pipe. Our guest speaker, Cory Keen, showed tremendous teaching ability, and we agreed that the workshop was an excellent way to teach geometry and math skills. All students were able to finish their projects, and because of Cory’s kindness and desire to help our students push themselves a step further, he offered $20 to the student who could build a runway followed by a 3 stair double-set, and a side hubba (a mini side wall alongside the stairs) with a skater on it performing any trick. The winner was Brian Pineda, shown in the photo.
The workshop left us thinking about other ways to expand and stretch our students’ vision about real math life-skills. Big shout out to Cory Keen for coming all the way from Long Beach and volunteering his time at our Success Lab!
